New York Spine and Wellness Center is a multidisciplinary pain specialist practice where we care about our patients as whole people, not just as medical diagnoses. As such, we offer Behavioral Health Services to all of our patients to help assess, educate and support you through the treatment process to make healthy choices, to cope more effectively, and to become an active member of your treatment team.

The mind & body connection is a well-documented and researched phenomenon. It is not hard to see why experiencing chronic pain over time could lead to associated problems such as difficulty sleeping, frustrations with the people around you, or symptoms of depression (body & mind). What many people don’t realize is that your mindset and your behavior can have a direct impact on your pain level itself and your body’s response to medical treatment (body & mind). We want you to not only be able to cope with the issues that often come with chronic pain; we want you to learn how to have a direct positive impact on your pain and your treatment.
In addition, some of the medical treatments we offer at NYSWC involve routine assessments performed by licensed mental health professionals to make sure patients are prepared and able to be successful with those types of treatment.
You will complete screening questions at different times during your routine medical treatment. If any areas of concern arise from these questions, you may be recommended to Behavioral Health by your medical provider. Outside of this routine screening, you or your medical provider might recognize an issue that is becoming a concern and request a Behavioral Health assessment. We encourage you to talk to us or your provider about any concerns you may be having at any step in the process. We are always happy to see how we can help you work toward your treatment goals.
We offer screening, assessment, consultation, and individual/couples/family therapy. Most patients will begin by having a consultation or assessment with our licensed mental health professionals to determine which services are the best fit for your needs.
No, the Behavioral Health Department does not currently have a psychiatrist on staff, but we will be happy to help you with a referral if needed.
Some services are one-time appointments and other services involve weekly appointments over the course of a few months. Each appointment typically lasts 30-45 minutes. Again, this is a decision you make after reviewing the recommendations of the licensed mental health professional.
That’s great! You are already taking steps to improve your personal wellness. Our services are focused on mental health problems or health behaviors that are related to pain conditions. Some patients just continue with their current provider, some patients will add-on a service from NYSWC, and some patients may switch over to our services completely. We will be happy to consult with you and/or your current mental health provider to determine the best treatment plan for your needs.
We accept most insurance plans. Our authorization and billing departments work hard to determine your level of coverage for Behavioral Health Services. You may be responsible for your regular co-pay or co-insurance.
Most Behavioral Health Services are offered at our three Syracuse locations- North Syracuse, East Syracuse, and Camillus. Our hope is that you can be seen right in the same office where you receive your medical care. Occasionally, you may have to travel to our East Syracuse location for particular specialized services.
